Samurai Archives Japanese History Podcast

Follow your hosts on a trek into Japanese history, from ancient Japan to the end of the Samurai and all points in between - culture, warfare, literature, and interviews. Simply stated, our mission is to bridge the gap between the popular and the academic, and to bring the world of academic Japanese history accessible to a wider audience through discussion of topics and authors in an informative but informal manner. We encourage those listeners who want to know more to seek out works by the historians and authors we reference and interview, and to contribute to the conversation. Conversely, we hope scholars can view us as a way to reach a broader, non-specialist audience and raise the bar for general understandings of Japanese history. The Rogue Philosopher Jesse Workman is back to talk about the human perception of reality.  When reading history, it is easy to forget - or not even consider - that people 500 years ago weren't just more ignorant versions of ourselves; they experienced a reality wildly different from ours.  Their gods and monsters were as real to them as our reality is to us.  In essence, they were living in a fantasy novel with magic, supernatural beings, and an understanding of the world that from our point of view looks like comical superstitious ignorance, but was real, if not commonplace, for them.

Guys, I generally love your podcast, but lately you have become prone to meandering... A lot. I downloaded this hoping it would be a about how yokai or kami were part of the reality of japanese people in the sengoku are, or something like that. Instead you improvise a conversation about things like cotton mather and descartes. Lately the episodes seem to lack focus.
Mind you, this is meant to be constructive criticism. I love your passion for japanese history, it is contagious! But pretty please stay on topic!
